Marking Swing Highs and Lows Without Rear-View Bias
The most common issue we see in first-time chart reviews is inconsistent pivot labeling — levels that shift when the trader already knows the outcome.
In a swing context, your pivot labels anchor everything downstream: trend direction, support zones, and stop placement. When those labels move after a trade resolves, your journal becomes unreliable and your risk rules stop matching reality.
Define "swing" before you mark
At ThinkPath we use a simple rule for daily charts: a swing high is the highest high between two lower highs on each side, with at least three candles separating the center high from each neighbor. A swing low mirrors that logic. This is not the only valid definition — but picking one and keeping it matters more than perfection.
Mark from left to right, freeze at today
Open a six-month daily chart. Start at the oldest visible candle and walk forward one pivot at a time. Do not skip ahead to "interesting" areas. When you reach the current week, stop — even if the most recent candle looks like it might become a pivot tomorrow. Uncertain pivots get a question mark, not a moved line.
The three-candle confirmation delay
We teach a deliberate delay: wait three full sessions after a potential pivot before labeling it confirmed. This prevents marking every intraday spike that fades by the close. In fast markets the delay feels conservative; in choppy ranges it saves you from five false pivots per month.
Weekly chart cross-check
After daily pivots are marked, open the weekly chart for the same symbol. Major daily pivots should align with or nest inside weekly structure. If your daily swing low sits in the middle of a weekly down candle with no clear rejection, revisit the daily label before trusting it for stop placement.
Journal the label date
Write the date you confirmed each pivot in your journal. During reviews we often find traders relabeled a March low in April after price bounced — the journal date exposes that drift immediately.
These steps appear in every live chart review we conduct. If you want feedback on your marked charts, book a session and send your exports 24 hours ahead.
